By buying books through links from this site, you are supporting this site and the free software it provides.

Book

Teaches you C++, does exactly what it says on the cover! Then you can write your own simple programs and see how software is made. Once you're familiar with that, get a game programming book!

Book

One of the best books on beginning game development from scratch, you'll need a basic grasp of C/C++ (see above). Takes you from almost zero to a level where you can make games, contains concepts that will not age :)

Book

If you've mastered the above books, you're really serious about this. Code Complete gives you a complete guide to software construction, how to avoid most bugs and problems and how to look differently at your code.

When you're through, you have what it takes to conjure up serious games, so go ahead and make a few that really work! Then the world is your oyster and the following books can fill up any gaps remaining in your knowledge.

If you're through them all, go set up your own site, with your own games and recommend your own books, because Im not through them all yet! You know more than I do.
